What's the best way to cast videos from my mac to shield tv? I was going to try plex but noticed that there's a sign up requirement which killed it for me. What's the easiest way? From my ipad i can just click the cast button for example.

The Shield has built-in chromecast functionality. To be honest, I don't know how exactly to use a Chromecast, because I never cared about it, but it can't be too hard to figure out.
I have been using Plex for years. Love that it was free. Loved it enough to finally buy Plex Pass for $75. It really is a solid program that does its job well. You should really consider giving it a try. The only reason they do accounts is so you don't have to deal with managing static IPs and a VPN tunnel to access your content outside your home. They manage that for you and make it a simple plug and play experience. You can even share your library with friends without having to give them your account credentials. But if you don't care about that and just want access to files locally on your network, then Kodi does this without an account.
You can download soda player ( https://www.sodaplayer.com ) and cast from your mac to the Shield. Thats what I use and its perfect.
Lmao you could have signed up for Plex in the time it took to make this post. Plex is the best option.
Mac SMB share is easiest
Have you considered Emby?
If the Mac can share folders over the network you can use Kodi on the Shield. Why did the sign in requirement scare you away from Plex. It's nothing more than a efficient way for multiple devices to find your server.
