Over what wireless protocol do the Nvidia Shield and Mi Box remotes communicate with their devices?

by myalias1

IR? Bluetooth?

I'm researching universal remotes (probably picking a Harmony) and want to check which protocols I need to utilize.

Bluetooth

Shield uses Bluetooth I think

The actual Android TV version of the Mi Box's default remote is Bluetooth, but there is an IR input on the box compatible with the remote intended for the China only "TV box that runs a variant of phone Android" version that works, though no voice capability on the IR one for obvious reasons. It has a Menu key instead of the voice one, the Back and Home buttons are in a different order, and the clickyness of the buttons seems different

Shield uses bt for the normal remote and wifi direct for the game controllers.

Harmony Hub is compatible with the Shield. Control is over network, I believe.

Source: I have both devices.

Shield remote will accept IR controls. I can use my TVs remote for controlling basic cursor, play pause etc.

Mi Box = excellent, responsive, ergonomic Bluetooth. So good Shield owners wish they had one. ;-)

There is also a hidden IR receiver in the front of the box that can accept Harmony remote IR signals when such remotes are reprogrammed as a Xiaomi Mi Box 3
