Best Android TV box for travel in van?

by zoenphlux

I have a 2015 Toyota Sienna with the BluRay ultrawide screen system with HDMI imput as an option. I also have a lot of movies on Vudu and Google play. What I am wanting to do is use an android tv box in the van. I would like a system that lets me download the movies to the device, as well as play some games. The system in the van actually supports dual imput, so you can watch a movie on one side, and have a game system plugged into the other side.

I want an Nvidia Shield tv, but I'm not dropping that kind of money on it. I would rather get something in the 30-50 range just because it is cheaper, but I know that goes into the just android systems and not offical android tv.

Of all the options, which would be best? Which ones let you download movies to an SD card? I'm not sure if the vudu apps on android tv allow it.

It sounds like you're asking for an Android box. We only discuss Android TV devices like the Shield TV or the Xiaomi Mi Box. Those are the two readily available products right now and one is $170+ and the other is $70, so still not in the $30-$50 range you're asking about.

I wouldn't recommend any of those cheap junk boxes.

You basically want anything that will run Kodi that can take a SD card or USB Look at a raspberry pi or something

Ah, I didn't realize this was only official Android TV.

Youtube reviews of some of the other android boxes are really good. As far as Kodi, I don't use it. I need official ways to download google movies and Vudu movies. Thanks.

Mi Box would suffice and not break the bank, $69 at Walmart. It can play up to N64 era emulators without many issues, Netflix, kodi, usb input for a hard drive or flash drive.

let me be clear. I don't use Kodi. I do not use stand alone movie files. I don't download movies outside of official channels. I also don't plan to have a big game console in the van. They are hot and get loud. I just want a simple android device that can store the movies I have purchased and play games some too.

I also don't plan to stream movies through the device, at least not all the time. That's why I prefer to find something that will let me download them while at home, and have offline copies while in the van.

Does anybody know if the official Android TV devices allow you to download movies with the Vudu and google play apps?

I didn't easily find any information on your van's A/V system. Does the Bluray player have a USB input? If so, you can try to load some DLNA-compatible videos onto a thumb drive and plug it into your van's Bluray player. You wouldn't have to buy any new hardware if it worked, but you might have to transcode your movies because DLNA only supports a few codecs.

Stop looking for a box and instead look into tablets that have mini HDMI or can do HDMI through a USB OTG adaptor. You'll also want one that can take microSD since you'll be downloading video from Netflix, Amazon etc for offline viewing.

I appreciate the advice, but I've used tablets that way before and I hated it. The screen didn't format right (may not with the android box), and both screens had to be on the whole time. I used my surface pro 3 in this case. I was very disappointed. I assume an android tablet would be the same. For the price, a cheap android box seems like the way to go and has a remote to boot.

I picked up a 64gb USB stick for $12 of if Amazon recently, which I've set as storage on the Mi box. Google play allows for offline downloading and viewing of movies. Along with the gaming others mentioned, and a few dollars more than you expected, I think you would be set.

Edit: card to stick

Laptop hooked to TV. Assuming you have a laptop that is.

So I got a device in. It's a basic 2gb/8gb android box. The interface is sorta clunky, but mainly the apps that are a bit of a pain to use. I have to use a mix of mouse/keyboard and the controller. Someone really needs to make a full on Android TV launcher, but that won't fix the apps themselves.

So, I answered a couple questions that others might want to know.

Vudu - only plays SD, and can't download. It's a DRM issue with these boxes being rooted that forbids downloading. I suppose if the box is not rooted, you possibly could download.

Google play movies - Plays and downloads fine in HD or SD. however, I am having an issue where you still need to be online for most downloaded movies to play. I've only read one other complaint about this on a cell phone, so it could just be this box or the app needs resetting. The movies downloaded will play once I turn on a hotspot.

Storage - I can't get a USB HDD to work, but I did plug in a 32 GB Sd card and 64 GB USB stick I had. I never could get much info on this to know what was possible, but with the box running Android 6 it formatted the USB stick as internal. Once you do this the internal storage size goes up under settings and apps like vudu and google play shows the full amount under internal, not as a usb drive. I have over 400 movies, and even in SD they download at approx 1gb each. To get all the movies I want in the van, I'll need something with a 500gb drive. These android boxes are a pain to figure out what supports what size and what kind of storage.

The box I got doesn't have Bluetooth, and a USB Bluetooth dongle doesn't work even though it was advertised as working with android boxes.

It has been half fun and half annoying to use this. It only partly does what I want, but I think to get the full effect i'm going to get a Sheild TV. I wanted the open app option, but now find that it's worthless because many apps (games) don't work even with the wireless keyboard and touchpad. Perhaps a better device with better Bluetooth controllers will do better, but so far I've never had a good experience using Bluetooth controllers and android games. I can never seem to find a game that works. by the time you get a better android tv, you are in the same price range as an official shield tv.

All in all, it does work. It shows full screen on my ultrawide Sienna TV, and the split screen option is nice but I think it has too many glitches for me to be satisfied. Vudu issues, limited storage. Oh well, it's not terrible, just isn't what I hoped for.

And before anybody says I should have gotten a Mi box, they suck for storage too. Sheild tv is the only option that I have it seems to fit all my goals.

So, that was a failure. I'm kinda aggravated that with all my googling I couldn't find this, and all my comments in here nobody clarified it. Vudu and Google do NOT allow offline movies on offical Android TV it seems. I went and got a Mi Mbox at Walmart just to see what I could do, and I found out it doesn't allow you to download movies offline on Google or Vudu. With so many people in here recommending an official android tv knowing what I wanted this is very disappointing and was avoidable. It is a completely unusable device, as is shield. I'm so glad I didn't waste money on a shield!

If you want to download movies offline and take them with you from official sources like Google or Vudu, skip official Android TV and use a generic android tv box instead.

Honestly, I'm not sure streaming in a van is a good idea. What you probably want is a local PLEX or Kodi setup reading files from flash. In which case you really really want the SHIELD (but not the pro one, the regular one).

Of course, if you're going to have a PS4 of X Box One plugged in, then any kind of AndroidTV box is kind of redundant anyway, when you think about it. Since you can also play files off of a USB stick or SSD on those as well.
