I know we have root access to files on the beta 1028. But is it possible to use apps that need root with the Mi box somehow? Like some specific functions in Tasker that require root, like Killing apps.

The Bootloader is Locked even with user-debug FW 1028 1035 on the Mi Box. It cannot be unlocked.
Subsequently you cannot permanently Root the Mi Box with SuperSU or Magisk to give user installed Apps Root access.
You'd need to install SuperSU. There's an install zip on xda somewhere but I don't think it works on nougat.
