Can emulators run roms and ISOs from an external flash drive on the Shield TV, or do I have to copy them over?

Exactly what the title says. Do I have to copy the roms to the Shield? Do I have to mount the Flash drive as internal? Thank you in advance!!

External is good, there are no problems since games are miniscule unlike today's games

I run all my roms off a NAS that I've mounted on my Shield. Works really well.

I've run them off flash drive and copied over to the built in memory, both worked perfectly (Mi Box) with RetroArch.
