New genuine Android TV Box - Geniatech ATV495 Max

by BiggussDikkuss

Time to add this one to the subreddit ATV list.

Another legit Android TV box joins the party from Geniatech:

https://www.geniatech.com/geniatech-atv495max-android-tv-box-got-google-android-tv-approval/

Advantages over the Mi Box:

  • Android TV OS 7.1 that supports HDR

  • RJ45 10/100M Ethernet interface

  • 2xUSB2.0

  • MicroSDHC slot

  • Minus - No Optical/SPDIF

What it demonstrates now is how really poor Xiaomi are with their Android 7.1.1 OS updates for the Mi Box.

Why are we not seeing Netflix Logos in ATV495 advertising ?

Surely this device is Netflix Approved ?

Like Xiaomi, they are touting the fact that the chipset, "Supports hardware decoding of 4k@60P 10bit HEVC(H.265)"

Which while technically true, also happens to be very misleading. I think a lot of people will take that to mean the device can play that format without dropping an unreasonable amount of frames, which it will not be able to do.

Seems like all S905X boxes are prone to having off and on performance issues with various 4K formats at just 30fps and play all 4K / 60fps formats like dogshit.

Still, if it's 100 dollars or less and ships with Nougat it might be a better buy than the Mi Box. Even if they never release an OS upgrade they would still be tied with Xiaomi in that respect.

Geniatech is more than capable of building a tv box. They were one of the originators of the concept of android tv boxes. In that sense, they could teach Xiaomi a thing or two about tv boxes. For that matter, they could teach Xiaomi about over-promising and under-delivering, as Geniatech has been perfecting that art form for nearly a decade.

For instance...still waiting for Kodi PVR integration of their tuner equipped boxes since Kodi was still XBMC.

Also, Geniatech prides themselves for positioning their products at the higher end of the price spectrum. Likely no bargain to be found here...

10/100 port? in the age of 4k what is it not gigabit?

CuvisTheConqueror

Minus - No Optical/SPDIF

Excited to see more from this. I hope it's reasonably priced and performs better than the MiBox.

Great to see another entry, and I hope it's priced right around $80-$100.

Netflix?

Their remote seems not having volume control options.. 😅

Amlogic 905, so it's similar to the Fire TV and MiBox. I wonder if this will apply (from the Kodi website):

The decision was made that from Krypton onwards there are no longer any custom Kodi code hacks, for both Video as well as Audio. Rockchip hacks were the first to go and now AMLogic. Every Chipset vendor now has to use standard Android Application Programming Interfaces (API's) in their Android OS implementation. This decision was made to ease the burdon on Kodi developers with code maintenance. Its all about standardisation across the Android Kodi software.

There is not even a regular Kodi Android code maintainer anymore. So its bye bye Amcodec and hello standard Google Mediacodec.

If Audio and Video features no longer work with Android AMLogic Hardware its because the Firmware is too old or is rubbish, its not following proper Android API implementations or has poor Mediacodec video Hardware acceleration support.

As a side note, I do like the remote, and I want to get my hands on one just to mess with.

At least it has an ethernet port (albeit a 10/100 one). HDR is nice too, but no USB 3.0 is kind of annoying.

Any chance for Dolby Vision in any Android TV box?

It's an almost identical box, so assuming it's not a Xiaomi rebadge, it'll come down to how much support they're willing to put into getting the drivers and OS implementation up to scratch.

Unless someone wants to dive in and tell me that isn't another S905X/D SoC.
