Turn off microphone when using search

by TheSubtitlesAreReal

I just got my first Android TV, a Philips 55" 55PUS6432. Is there a way to turn off the microphone thing that shows up every time you want to search for something? Doesn't matter if it's YouTube or some other app. It's really weird that this is what the TV does by default since my TV doesn't even have a microphone. If it isn't possible, what do you do when your TV doesn't have a microphone?

Does the remote app not have a built in mic? You can download the Android TV app to do voice search. I believe that is from the Google Assistant update. I just received an update with it. I will see if I can find out anything.

Update: I see what you are talking about. If you go into Settings > Apps > Permissions > Microphone and select turn off for each app it will then try to voice search and pull up the keyboard instead. In YouTube I did have to select "Deny, don't show again" after changing the setting.

I hope this helps for now!

Same problem here. It's very annoying.

I tried attaching a web cam to the TV to use its microphone, and it works in dedicated apps, but not for search. Very annoying. Not sure how to get this right.

my TV doesn't even have a microphone.

From a dev perspective, sometimes, depending on the device hardware, the OS lets us initialize the microphone even if you don't "have" a built-in mic attached to the TV.

I guess it assumes there is data coming IN from the 3.5mm audio jack.. is that in use?

With my shield if I don't want to talk to the tv I can hit the right "arrow" on my remote and it'll bring up the keyboard right away and then off the mic. Does that work on your TV?

I wish there was a way to get rid of it. YouTube annoys me the most because it's notification sounds like there is something wrong if you don't have or choose not to use the mic.

I personally don't want to talk to inanimate objects. In my day crazy ass people would talk to objects. Don't even use it on my phone because touching an icon is just as quick and doesn't sound like I have tourettes, blurting out random words.

Sorry for the rant.
