Here's proof how my tablet can connect to my PC (Kodi, UPnP source).
Then you can see how the Mibox can't connect to the same source with the same method, even though it did just 5 minutes ago.
Only after unplugging the Mibox (restarting Kodi changed nothing) did it detect my PC.
I just want to listen to music and watch a movie from beginning to end without losing connection every fucking day. Is that too much to ask for?!

So it works? The issue you are experiencing is network disconnections?
Maybe ask for help before raging?
I use Mi Box almost daily with Netflix, YouTube, Kodi, RetroArch, Chrome Cast, X-plore, ESPN, etc. with almost zero issues. Just do the occasional reboot like any Android device.
Sad to say, wireless on Android boxes are usually worse than even a cheap tablet. Look into getting a wired setup via powerline, it makes a huge difference.
Yeah, you dont need to be rich to afford a shield
kodi on my Mibox works just fine.. can acess my pcs just fine. maybe its something in your configuration that are resolving properly the pc name.. try using a IP Adress

Connect via SMB. Had a spotty experience with Upnp. Also, if possible, connect the Mibox via ethernet.
Try Kodi 18 alpha or SPMC (due to SMB1 issues and Windows 10 after Creators Update) and SMB source.
My Shield couldn't connect at all until after I changed to either Kodi 18 or SPMC
