What does someone mean when they ask for their android box to be updated?

by 3000d

Silly question at first, however, several people who use these Android boxes have asked me to update them. I have experience with Kodi and such, but I'm being told that shows/movies aren't playing and that the Android box needs to be updated.

One friend has a Leelbox, the other has a Mygica.

Basically, which level needs the update? Android, Kodi, The plugin itself or all of the above?

Sorry for little details as I don't have the boxes and or experience with them.

They are talking about the generic Chinese boxes. What I like to call TV boxes with Android on them. Not Android TV devices like we discuss here.

feclar

those are not androidTV

JimboLodisC

Those are boxes that run touchscreen Android. It sounds like their illegal streaming plugins in Kodi are getting shut down and they need some fresh ones to get their media back. Or maybe it's cuz these cheap junk boxes usually come with a version of Android from 2014. So they are severely behind on security updates.

In this subreddit, though, we discuss official Android TV devices. This is an operating system that was forked and optimized by Google for the living room. For these products, you'll get official support from Google and the OEM for operating system updates. You'll also be getting official apps from the Play Store, certified to show everything in HD.

Thanks guys for being helpful despite my ignorance. These are boxes owned by family members as I don't typically use these products but am somehow the goto for these problems.

Ask them what they want updated?

WhySheHateMe

These are people who purchased "fully loaded" android boxes with a bunch of piracy add-ons added to Kodi.

They want you to update their devices because their pirated media isn't working.

shows/movies aren't playing makes me believe they are using pirate kodi addons and those go down, Genesis then Covenant, etc. Sounds like you'd need to find what the new latest and greatest is, which is a slippery slope. You do it once and the next time an addon goes down you are the go to guy to do it again.

Use the fresh start add-on to factory reset Kodi. Charge them £20 and recommend they install a popular build themselves, preferably one you've tested yourself. That way you've done nothing illegal.

They mean to use the latest features on such cheap Android Boxes the sellers will make you buy another one of their cheap boxes every time the Android OS get a major version bump eg. 6.x > 7.x

That is their exact business model in a nutshell.
