Advice re Media Setup

by wztnaes

I have a Sony XE90 TV which has Android TV & chromecast built-in as well as a QNAP TS-251 NAS (which I intend to set up once I move and get much better internet). I'm wondering if it makes sense to purchase a NVDIA shield or similar as I want to be able to play bluray discs. I don't really play console games so that's not a big issue for me at all. I would appreciate suggestions!

Nvidia Shield doesn’t have a Blu-ray player or a disc drive unless your talking about hooking up a external drive - something I’ve never heard done but could be doable.

Personally it seems redundant since your tv already has Android TV to get a Shield too. If Xbox One S isn’t a device you’d ever ever want even if just for the 4K Blu-ray player then I’d probably look into investing in creating a NAS setup for a Blu-ray collection. There are Apps available in the Play Store to access the files and playback and pretty sure a few that include nice leanback presentations of the ripped library - like Plex.

You can Rip normal 1080p Bluray's to your NAS in a whole Disc .ISO format.

Then you use something like Plex, Kodi, SPMC etc. on a Sony - Android TV etc to playback those ripped .ISO discs with a simple Menu.

If you want proper Bluray Menus's, extras etc really need to buy a special (non Android TV) media player or use a Bluray player.

Be aware Android TV on SonyTV's has Audio limitations with DTS passthrough Audio with an App like Kodi. See the Android Kodi Sub-forum where every Sony Android TV user complains continually.

You mean you want to play ripped Blu-ray discs, right?
