Shield TV remote is so disappointing

by ronakg
  • It lags so much more compared to the Mi Box remote
  • Takes multiple clicks to wake it once it's been idle for some time
  • Volume control touch strip is so much more difficult to use compared to buttons on the Mi Box remote
  • Why can't I pair the Mi Box remote to the Shield TV?

I despise the volume slider. I constantly accidentally change the volume.

I agree. I much prefer my miBox remote to the ShieldTV remote.

The remote issues are a recent thing. I'm sure it has something to do with adding google assistant and trying to conserve power. It used to not take so long to wake the remotes up. It's the one irritating thing about an otherwise really awesome streaming device

I use my Harmony remote now.

Yeah, I've started using my TV remote to control the volume instead of the Shield remote. Much less frustrating.

I have the 2017 remote and it sucks. The volume slider almost never works. Play/pause works fine. No power button also sucks. I'm glad we have the Google Home system already so I just added the Sheild to our shortcut to turn everything off. But still annoying.

It took several years of testing different remotes before i found anything halfway decent for my shield.

The Harmony Companion is your friend, as long as you don't mind a few extra/unnecessary buttons. It connects via Bluetooth so it doesn't have the terrible lag that IR remotes have and the battery life is incredible. It would almost be perfect if it had voice control and backlit buttons.

I really like the Mi Box remote also. I don't get why you can't pair it to Shield but wish you could (although I have never seen a place to buy the remote separately anyway).

Mrtheboyfull

Mine only takes one click to wake up and it doesn't lag.

I wish I could use the MiBox Remote on my Nexus. I do find having volume buttons to be useful, but replacement MiBox remotes simply dont pair with the Nexus. Its a shame there isnt a simple remote that will work, everything ive found has 20 buttons on it, or a qwerty keypad on the other side.

niuguy

Have you considered a Logitech Harmony?

loggedn2say

well fuck again...i'm opening a shield tv on xmas and it's one of the reasons i asked for it over the awful nexus remote.

I have a Mi box 3 and Shield in the house, and the two remotes could not be any different. The mibox one just works, the Nvidia one seems to take forever to wake up, then clicks dont register for three seconds and then suddenly all the clicks come though. I hope Nvidia finds a solution soon, it really harms the experience.

My Shield remotes work fine. How many of you had USB drives attached at the time of the last upgrade?

Rrushx

I had this lag before also. After moving the shield to a place that's within LOS lag just disappeared completely. Still takes a few seconds to wake up the remote though.

BOFslime

All I want is a dedicated pause/play button, double tapping on the volume slider is problematic and annoying. (2015 remote)

This took me a while to figure out how to easily wake the remote and why it sometimes takes a few clicks.

2017 model and purely anecdotal evidence, so ymmv.

It seems the remote has some sort of accelerometer in it. If you have it laying flat and use the game controller and go to the shield accessories on the home screen. Right now it should say not connected. Now pick up the remote and hold it vertically. You'll see the remote become active.

So what I end up doing is when I pick the remote up, I turn it vertically as I pick it up. By the time you hold it horizontal again it's already connected and ready to use.

TL;DR - Just flip the remote vertically when you pick it up.

If you can pair the Mi Box remote with the NVIDIA Shield and then Root the Shield, and copy the Mi Box remote's .kl keylayout files across into the appropriate Android folder it will work. Voice search likely will not work however.

This Mi Box BT remote control adding has already been done on numerous boxes running Android TV ROM's. It's not rocket science.

NVIDIA could do this easily too if enough users request such and addition to Shield Firmware. It's not like .kl Mi Box remote control files are copy protected.

CEC is the way to go if you don't care about voice control gimmicks imo
