4k question: Xiaomi mi box or Amazon firestick

by phantom-101

Hello guys, I’m searching for a good solution to watch (possibly) 4k video in streaming on my OLED Lg tv. Webos doesn’t allow me to install kodi, and I need it. So, I’m thinking to buy an external device to get it.

Amazon firestick: cheap solution, but only at 1080p. I can get it for 29 euros. Xiaomi mi box: 56 euros. It should be ok, but I read about some issues in 4k (slow hardware?). I can link it with ethernet cable (with an adapter).

Let me know what is the best choice, I wouldn’t spend 150 for the Nvidia shield now...

You bought an OLED TV but won't pay $149 for a Shield? Come on mate. If you want a proper 4k experience, just shell out for the Shield.

Ok guys, thank you for you advices.

I’ll buy the Shield :)

use the built in apps where you can...

Recently Google announced that it won't support YouTube on fire TV unless Amazon sign a deal. If you watch YouTube and want the Amazon fire tv I strongly recommend to wait a little bit to see how this story will end.

Use a pc or bite the bullet for a shield. If you broke the bank for an LG oled I'm sure you can afford it. Why cheap out on something inferior now?

Yes guys, I understand what your’re saying about money, but Nvidia shield born to be a “gaming console” too and I don’t need this. Do you thing that the 100€ circa of difference worth it? I only want to have a good and powerful media player for 1080p and 4k contents.

i have nexus, firestick, and rokus and a shield on the way.

honestly for the color correction and good experience across all apps, i would say get a firestick for kodi and later on get an appletv for netflix/amazon/everything else. it's not like kodi and it's...stuff is ever going to have great hdr even on the shield.

i keep reading about the remote issues and the better color accuracy for hdr on appletv here, so i'm thinking about returning the shield or getting an appletv later.

Holllld on, wait...why on earth are you considering the Fire Stick but not the new 4K Fire TV (which is priced the same as the MiBox)

I have a mibox, had a shield and have the new 4K Fire tv.

It is a MUCH better value than the MiBox for casual use. Much faster, works with the echo.

Ok guys, last advice: I don’t need it now and I can wait 3/4 mounths. Is better to wait? Is a new model coming on the market? Thanks

Of course shield TV. Lol. My next would be mi box or 2015 4k fire TV box.

Cough Couch ** COUGH** !!!

You should NOT be using any WiFi only streaming boxes to try and watch high bitrate 4K video on any device - ever. Expect trouble ahead, especially trying to do high bitrate 4K Kodi video streaming.

Even using a USB2 > Ethernet adapter is not going to work for demanding 4K Kodi on the Mi Box.

These Xiaomi & Amazon streaming devices are for comparatively low bitrate 4K Netflix and 4K Amazon Video only. That is exactly what they were designed to do. Not demanding 4K Kodi usage.

4K Kodi Krypton with correct colorspace switching for mixed SDR / HDR10 usage, on a budget = an AMLogic S912 device running LibreELEC Kodi Krypton.

I would not use a NVIDIA Shield for mixed SDR / 4K HDR10 video streaming usage at all because it cannot switch colorspace outputs. It's a Major flaw with the Shield at the moment. The Apple TV 4K is much better for SDR / HDR10 / DolbyVision usage where everything works properly. Set and forget.

Even the 2017 4K Fire TV Gen3 I believe gets colorspace outputs correct. I still would not use that either for 4K Kodi.
