So why is your Shield connected to the TV instead of the receiver anyway? It's an unnecessary link in the chain.
Have you tried Shield HDMI to receiver, then HDMI from receiver to TV?
Maybe you need to enable arc on your TV
You have to setup your TV to pass audio processing to your receiver.
Optical does not support anything past DD
You are best to buy a receiver and call it a day
All external Android TV media players running Netflix need to be HDMI connected to a Dolby Digital Plus capable audio receiver - otherwise expect 2.0 PCM audio output only every time.
Looks like the TV cannot accept DD+ over HDMI.
Buy an Apple TV, that can convert 5.1 DD+ Netflix to 5.1 DD only for audio compatibility.
The Shield cannot do that conversion either because it has No Dolby Audio licence. Blame NVIDIA.
