Nvidia Shield TV Remote

by 8bitInventor

Hi everyone! After struggling with my aging Nexus Player I finally bit the bullet and bought an Nvidia Sheild TV.

Once I got it up and running I was very happy with the speed / responsiveness of the UI and applications.. its very quick.

I love that I finally have a functional voice search (looking at you Nexus Player)

And the remote (I've got the rechargeable one with the microphone jack) has a great hand feel to it and works well. However It went through the battery in just under a month -- and I don't remember ever seeing an alert that the battery was getting low. I'm really not wanting to have yet another device that I constantly have to worry about charging. I'm wondering what my options are.

I hear there is a newer? remote powered by a button cell that is supposed to last for a year? Anyone have experience with this?

I hear that the old Amazon fire tv/stick remote without voice search can work with the device? I'm not a huge fan of the hand feel of this remote, but am willing to sacrifice that for battery longevity.

Any other options?

What exactly are you doing with these remotes that "hand feel" is so important? You pick it up, hit a button or two and put it down, it’s not your lover...is it?

I have the 2017 shield and remote. I never use it because it's too unreliable. It basically has to "wake up" every time I use it and it has a delay. Not sure if I'm using it wrong but the mic on the remote never understands me either. I just use a Harmony remote and will get a Google home for casting etc in the near future.

I use the 2nd gen alexa voice remote (fire tv) on my Shield.
Uses 2 AAA batteries and so far it's been 3 months and going strong.

I bought it off ebay for $15.

my remote barely lasts a day, and its been like that since the beginning. so annoying.

I just use the controller for everything as a result.

Personally I feel like the XBOX one remote is one of the nicest and most complete without having too many buttons or being too big. You should be able to get it to work with a FLIRC receiver plugged into the USB ports on the shield. Either that or there are a couple of decent looking RF remotes on Amazon like the Minix remotes and RXII, or harmony remotes on the upper end. I'm not sure how compatible they are though - only the Harmony I know for sure will work. If you have a programmable remote and a Shield with an IR window you can also just program the Shield IR codes into the remote. I looked into the Amazon Fire remotes but they didn't seem all that much nicer. Even tried to pair an Apple TV remote once but couldn't get it to work.
