Shield vs MiBox (for 1080p TV)

by heraldicchestnut

Most of the comparisons between these two that I've seen have been comparing performance at 4K. Obviously the Shield will be better in that case, but is it worth paying over twice the price for 1080p use?

Chromecast (Gen 1) has worked just fine up until now. YouTube stuttering has recently popped up, however, and the lack of a remote and Amazon Video is annoying for others when they try to watch something on my set.

Are there significant differences in casting (and emulator) performance between the two? Do either support playback of media from external hard drives?

I have two Mi Box's and for 1080p, they work as expected. I'm happy with them. Well worth the money I spent.

For 4k, it's a no brainer to get the shield.

I've used Mi Box for over a year with Netflix, Kodi, YouTube, Hulu, RetroArch (NES, SNES, Genesis, GBA, PS1, FBA, etc. emulator), Chrome Cast, Spotify, X-plore, and Fox Sports. Yes I installed the latest Android 7 "beta" but it work well, real issues. Yes it supports playback from USB drive. Amazon Video however is not supported, oh well.

Can't tell you how well the MiBox performs...but the Shield is working great for my 1080p needs. Really happy with my purchase.

A big main difference to me, outside of 4K, is expandable device storage. I like having Kodi versions of my libraries to play with. One full copy of the metadata balloons up to 5gb pretty quickly add maybe 3 big games and the space is shot. The Mibox becomes a device with limited utility compared to the Shield. Not having Amazon Video and YouTube TV increase the distance between the two. No is that worth the difference in the price? Only you and your wallet know for sure.

If you don't need Android TV, Netflix and Dolby stuff, you can also consider all the generic Android boxes which are running around. Getting one of the good ones gives better performance than a MiBox for less money, and can easily install Amazon Video.
