dec 11 beta updated again https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/7j10lr/xiaomi_just_dropped_beta_nougat_update_build_1560/

this time the beta is open to anyone who wants to download it and they are asking for people to test specific things https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/xiaomi-mdz-16-ab-nougat-beta-download-source-build-1560-12-2017.42621/

I have been asked by the tech team to make this late Beta build available to the general public.

Your sincere comments relating to THIS SPECIFIC BUILD ONLY are requested. Please post your feedback under this topic.

Kindly focus on the following aspects...

Youtube

Netflix HDR

Live Channels Picture-in-Picture

HDMI CEC

i'd imagine release candidate is next-up barring a major bug find.

I think that we need to relax, this is the Chinese approach to user support, and it's not surprising that within a couple of months they will rename the last beta version (which is completely stable) to the release version and close the support for this device. I'm happy with this device for such a low price.

This is embarrassing, they should have just scrapped it and started on 8 when it was announced.

When I had my MiBox, I expected the following:
*An inexpensive replacement to the Amazon Fire Stick
*4k Support in Netflix
*Able to use Kodi without many issues

It did all of this, and much better than the Fire stick for a little bit more money. I wanted to add gaming and a more rubust service to do 4k Kodi, Amazon without issue so I upgraded to a Shield. Now that Amazon is supposedly coming to the Mi Box, I'm fairly certain ill get another one for a bedroom tv unless I can find a 2nd Gen Fire TV box for the same cost.

Meanwhile Android 8.1 just came out.

Its been over a year since I bought my MiBox, not a single update.

I cannot in good conscious recommend this device to anyone.

Again, what is the benefit of Nougat?

I stream, I use Kodi, I watch live TV with my hdhomerun, all on my stock Mibox... I don't use the voice control options that are there so I'm not sure what else nougat brings to the table? Gaming? I have a PS4 for that.

When marshmallow was getting feature releases after nougat betas were rolling out I knew this box was a mistake

Got a bunch of Xiaomi bots down voting everything negative in this thread. I welcome their attention.

I bought 3 Mi Boxes the day they came out. They've all been nothing but headaches. HBO Now and Go error out when attempting to play anything in the apps. The remotes constantly need re-pairing. Netflix does not like it if you put the box to sleep. Needs a hard reboot to fix Netflix when it does this (daily). Audio falls out of sync across all apps occasionally. Needs a hard reboot to fix that. Casting can be problematic.

Down vote away, bots. Maybe you guys can pull some more people away from the "impending" beta to create more of em to hide this box's shitty behavior.

it still does exactly what i need it to at a price that was great. i expected nothing more than i got for $60. expectations with anything tech is just going to lead to disappointment.

This is so frustrating, there’s still a lot of work to do on this firmware and, tbh, it feels like they still will take awhile to release a stable version of this thing.

I wish they had done an open beta since the beginning.

realslizzard

I had zero issues with android 6 I may not even update mine until I verify nougat has no issues.

Be grateful they are even making one. Every other non android tv box gets nothing except random security patches.

I got my Mi Boxes a few months ago. For me, they do everything I want and a little more. I was running Kodi on some Linux hardware and wanted a "just have it and not worry about updates that could go wrong" experience.

I could not be happier (again, for me. YMMV).

As for updates: I'd rather have a stable update than bleeding edge just because. Maybe I'm getting old, but I come from a time when updates for devices didn't happen for years at a time.

Perhaps because of this I don't feel the need to chase every shiny thing a vendor pumps out, usually half-assed, because the internet lets them use us as beta testers and they can fix it later.

The thing is I really like my Mi Box. It is extremely disappointing they never updated it. I won't be buying any more Xiaomi stuff.

It's clearly a sign that Google needs to make their own streaming box, such as Nexus Player. That being said, I'm still on the latest stable firmware and don't miss out on anything special, though a security update wouldn't hurt.

Everybody suggesting Shield, why would you need all that power (that comes with quite a hefty price) if you need the box only for streaming.

reztho

I'm still using the stable firmware. I wonder if with that beta, apps can write to the USB device. For example, in Kodi try to delete a file from an USB pen drive. Can anyone confirm? Thanks.

starboy2008

I see a lot of replies of people saying it works fine for the price but.. they advertise HDR and the box doesn’t even do HDR! Isn’t that just false advertising?

It sucks it's taken this long, but everyone here whining about it (when that does absolutely zer0 good) would be those same people complaining if they had released it & it was buggy as hell.

I'm not fan of waiting, for anything, but I'd rather have it released later once correctly, than to have gotten a 'stable' release earlier that was fubar.

With them opening the beta testing to all & having new beta versions available about every month or so, it's obviously being worked on.

Mibox is a piece of shit. Face reality get a shield
