Should just have the box on the list as well as your TV when you click the button in app, I do it to a roku box as their YouTube app seems more responsive and quicker than the one on my Sony TV.
For one of those generic boxes try a share the yatse app to Kodi with upnp enabled. Using Android mobile device
If you're using ATV on a non ATV box, they don't work very well with casting.
Go to the YouTube app on TV and get to the settings, press Link and get a code.
Go to the app on your phone, go to settings, press Watch on TV, and enter the code you from the TV
Sounds like your android box is not android tv
