Mi Box Overheating (turning off when using USB harddrive)

by eddycha

Hey Guys. Wanted to know if I had a faulty unit or if this is a known problem. I finally bit the bullet and bought a new Mi Box 1 week ago and to be honest, it runs everything I need and I was very happy with it. I'm only 1 week in and had it set up perfect.

However, I have a USB 500gb harddrive (2.5 inch, powered by USB port on Mi Box). I started watching a movie from it via Kodi and an hour into it, the system turned itself off. On restart, if I tried doing anything intensive, it would turn off. On feeling the device, it was very warm so I feel this is a heat-switch as the device was overheating.

Is my unit faulty and would be fixed by a store exchange or is running a movie from a USB drive drawing power from the device always going to do this? I had previously used the chromecast and streaming functions for >2 hours without it turning off.

Thanks for the help

Not sure if the USB can power an external hard drive. It could be trying to pull too much power thus turning off.

Try to get a USB dongle that has an external power source attached.

I just watched a 2 hour movie from a 2.5” HD attached to MiBox. No problems at all. In fact I’ve done it this way a few times. Note that the unit does get fairly warm, but not to a point that it has shut down. If it persists I’d try the external power supply for the HD or return the unit

my mibox has been turned off several times due to overheating this summer, but the room was very hot ( +30~32 C), and it was on the working Pioneer receiver, while I did not use USB. The case of the Mibox was so hot that it was difficult to hold it in hands, After turning on the air conditioner at 22 C, the problem passed
