I want to play films with DTS and 5.1 Dolby through my receiver/TV. Will the $70 Mi Box work to play (sometimes 20GB) movie files? Or should I get the Shield?
I won't be doing any gaming -- ever. Just music and movies.
Thanks!

We have both in our household; sans for the gaming capabilities, my SO installs/runs everything (compatible) that I do on her Mi Box without issue & everything is connected wireless, as well.
Granted, setup & equipment varies, so you'll read a lot of other posts on here saying otherwise, but you always have to consider the source(s) & account for user(s) error when online.
Basically how are you going to be hooking up the media box to your TV/Receiver? TOSlink? HDMI?
Music and movies streaming, just get a Mi Box and save alot of money for more music and movies.
Shield is more for people that need more power than just streaming.
Mi Box works great for me with the following: Netflix, Kodi, YouTube, Spotify, Chrome cast, ESPN, Hulu, X-plore, and RetroArch. However none of my movie files streamed over network with Kodi are over about 4GB.
I think Mi Box is enough for your use case. I actually bought the shield when it went down to $149, but am now returning it. The remote is so bad that it's a deal breaker for my family. I didn't notice that big of a performance difference for my 1080p TV. Maybe for 4K, the shield has some advantage.
While on paper the experience should be similar, the Shield is in another league from the Mibox.
If you're interested in stuff "just working" and not having to dick around with weird app stores and sideloading applications, get the Shield.
(That said, the Shield has never been perfect - and I've had my fair share of bugs. But on the whole - it just works. I cannot say the same for the Mibox I tried to suffer through and ultimately returned)
I use archos media player (much more easier than kodi, even my mom can use it) and i have no problem with the mi box, even on heavy movies
I have both the Shield and the MiBox. The main usage is Kodi for both. I couldn't get any playback on the MiBox without drop frames with the same source than the Shield. I tried everything on the MiBox. The Shield adds a working autoframerate feature (eg : the output switch to 24P for 24 fps content and back to 60 fps for the GUI).
And the end, I sold the MiBox and bought another Shield.
I guess it answers your question :)
