I purchased it more than a year ago. I keep hearing that the update is coming since then, but have received nothing so far (via OTA).
This means Xiaomi told pure lies just to boost sales? I want to understand so that I can better choose a brand for my hardware next time.

Yes. It's slow as hell coming out, but I doubt they did these betas for the fun of it.
Can anyone know how many private betas did Nvidia did for shield for releasing nougat?, I guess xiaomi did 5 beta test of nougat and still no stable released.
Xiaomi’s mibox hardware to the most part is very reliable as it is like their 8th gen or whatever of android box (not to be confused with Android TV). However, for the natively Chinese speaking company, Android TV and chromecast enabled device is a first for them. Not to mention that Google Playstore is banned in China. Xiaomi got too ambitious and rushed their International version of Mibox release without getting their software department ready for the Western market. That being said, the much awaited software update is indeed criminally slow but it will eventually come. At least, we can generally be thankful that the hardware is not failing catastrophically.

People call the shield tv expensive but man, that money has really gone a long way in terms of performance, feature additions and software support.
