Use VLC player or Kodi
Archos Player works great IMHO
If you want to play the 4K mkv video's flawlessly with no buffering or skipping, use SPMC or Kodi. You can play them via usb from the HD or smb share streaming them from the HD connected to your PC. Check out the wiki for Kodi if you have any trouble.
Throw them on a hard drive and you can play them right through the built-in video player. There is no limitation that I've found to file size - I've played 60GB 4K UHD disc rips on it without a hiccup. The interface is godawful, but playback is great. Alternately, Plex Media Server plays them without a problem, including 4K.
put the HD with the movies on a computer on your network
share the folder where the movies are on your network
install Kodi on the TV
point Kodi to the network share
This way, you can all files to the HD and Kodi will automatically have access and will reindex (if you enable it)
Otherwise, plug it into your TV, install Kodi, and point Kodi to the local drive
Videostream for Chromecast is a no brainer solution: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/videostream-for-google-ch/cnciopoikihiagdjbjpnocolokfelagl?hl=en
The free version should suffice.
Best way is to hook up that drive to a PC and have that act as a Plex server.
Sorry if its a common question
Well search bars exist for you to find the answers to these kinds of common questions. Did you do any research before posting? Did you even try just searching the Play Store for an app that can play video and trying it out?
Can you load Plex on the TV? If so, I would recommend setting up a Plex server on your computer or buy a Shield Console that can also run a Plex server/playback MKV files.
If your Sony OLEDTV is 4K, you can download Sony’s advanced 4K Media Players (FMP-X1 and FMP-X10) that allow you to enjoy true 4k content on your ultra-widescreen 4K TV. The new 4k players let you grab nearly two hundred titles including 4k movies. If your 4k MKV video codec doesn't supported by Sony OLED TV, you can use Video Converter convert 4K video to 4k MP4 (MPEG-4).
MX Player should be able to play most files.
