I have a cheap TCL TV in my bedroom. It was dirt cheap. The picture quality is very good for the price, but the rest of the hardware sucks. It doesn't do audio passthrough properly so it only outputs stereo sound to my AVR. My other HDMI ports cause flickering when I have my streaming box plugged into its HDMI port and turned on. It has also never received a firmware update, making it feel more like a disposable monitor than a TV I'd like to keep for a long time. Still though, it was dirt cheap and the picture quality is surprisingly good. I'd consider another TCL in the future, but I'd make sure to buy a nicer one.
here's the section text:
Though not yet well-known in the USA, TCL is the third-largest maker of TVs in the world (behind only Samsung and LG). TCL previously made LCD panels for Samsung, so the company isn’t new to TVs. Keep in mind that now-familiar names such as Samsung and Vizio were also upstarts not much more than a decade ago. We are confident in the quality and track record of TCL’s TVs. Consumer Reports gives the company a reliability score that’s effectively the same as that of other major brands, and TCL has responded well to people who have had displays damaged by shipping, so we don’t think you should worry about purchasing one of its sets.
While the wirecutter recommendation does not have Android TV, in the rest of the world the OS for TCL TVs is Android TV. And it's great.
I bought a 40" TCL TV from Amazon on black Friday in 2011. That TV is still kicking. Two years later I bought a 39" on black Friday. Also still kicking. I'm a big fan of TCL. For the money you get a great TV. My experience has been positive and the TVs have been reliable for me.
I have the TCL P version (605?) and it's pretty good. A little dark in the corners but not overly prevalent. Picture are crisp and vibrant. Better than my old Samsung which was top of the line at the time I bought it.
I have a TCL 4K tv, although it uses Roku OS. Its a very decent TV. Not the best, but I only spent $350 including tax a year ago for a 55", so I wasn't expecting the best by any means. Right now, Walmart has a 55" 4K HDR version available for like $398 + tax.
