I'm happy that they're not rushing into the new launcher before more apps are ready.
The new launcher concept looks like a nightmare, especially if your local sources do not even recognize ATV and you have to side load...
I'd love to have the rest of the Oreo upgrades/features tho, it's just that damn new launcher.
Android TV 8.0 is a disaster. NO APPS should have to upgrade for a new launcher, they should be detected and show up as icons automatically. Google really fucked this OS up.
The good news from this is that the Nvidia Shield TV isn't forgotten. Nvidia now have even more reason to deliver the Oreo update if they plan to market these as high end screens.
Now we have to (continue) waiting, and hope these screens sell well enough to keep the Shield TV train going.
God, I hope Google just end up scrapping the launcher in Oreo. Looks terrible and will never get full support from app makers.
Not sure if this should have me worried, the recommendations bar on my pro unit bogs it down so much after reboot that I've disabled nearly all the recommendations. My base units don't have this issue, but also don't have the overhead of a Plex server.
Is it technically possible for someone to build a "good" launcher? I really like the channels feature but not if it's hard-coded to a limited number of apps and items. It would suck to have a huge matrix of YouTube-like recommendations.
Maybe someone else could make one that gives flexible channels, a choice of just icons if that's what you want, shows sideloads if that's what you want, and even features Live Channels instead of burying it down there with all the other apps you never use.
Would it be too much to ask to have my sideloaded apps show up in the primary launcher?
The Shield is awesome, but the interface and most Android TV-specific apps are garbage.
I hope include a Launcher that handles both channels and app icons.
