4k mkv doesn't tell us much. What's the video codec? What's the audio codec? What's the bitrate? Are you on wifi? Ethernet? Gigabit? What router?
I'm also using sony 4k tv. The only player that plays 4k for me is SPMC (kodi fork) and only when video is on the hard drive or flash drive that supports USB3 and in the USB3 slot
You could try MX player and see if either the software or hardware decoder works, but it could be the processor in the TV not being capable enough.
Try Plex. Sounds like forcing a transcode on the server might help a bit.

Archos. It automaticly donwnloads metadata of movies and TV shows, so you get a nice video library. It also play any kind of video format, anddd it has opensubtittles integrated.
The TV may not be powerful enough to handle the bitrate.
