So How is Android TV on the Sony TVs?

by dave9600

I've got a bedroom TV that I'm looking to replace and it currently has a Mi Box connected to it (which I don't care for). I'm considering replacing it with a Sony TV with Android TV built in so I can do away with the Mi Box. I'm just curious what everyone's thoughts are. I'll only be using Plex and Netflix. Thanks.

For plex and netflix they are fine. tried iptv via live channels on mine and it was flaky at best, but plex and netflix work just fine.

I just swapped out a Sony Bravia with Android TV, and it was overall really great. Some of the apps were not as good as versions on other devices - Vudu, most notably, as it lacks 4K UHD support, and Hulu, which lacks profile support (this is actually a problem with Hulu's apps across several manufacturers). The interface is straighforward, with the ability to reorder apps by most-recently-used or according to user preference. The granularity of control is everything you would expect from an Android OS. You can install apps from a browser, just as with any Android device, which is a nice feature.

The Plex app is the best I've seen on any device. It supports folder viewing, which most other devices' Plex apps do not (my new LG does not, which really sucks, and while the PS4 version does, it isn't nearly as nice a navigational experience as on the Bravia).

The Netflix app is excellent, but then I have yet to see one for any device that wasn't really great.

The overall experience is very good. Lag is minimal, and you can very easily close background apps if you feel the need to by long-pressing the 'home' button on your remote.

I think - but don't quote me - all Sony Android TVs have a built-in Chromecast, which you'll almost definitely find tremendously useful. I loved it so much that I'm going to buy a Chromecast Ultra for my LG.

I also really loved that, with a few tweaks, I could remove all of the ads on the TV interface - something I haven't been able to do on my LG. Yeah, smart TVs have fucking ads in their interfaces. It's a disgusting trend, but at least Android makes it something you can get rid off without too much difficulty.

In the end depends on how demanding a user you are.

and the kicker, Google Assistant can't launch Netflix, but can cast audio....
