Kodi keeps crashing and stuttering when playing videos from USB source. Got sick of it and uninstalled that shit.
I just want a media player (with a library, if possible) that can play the files on a portable HDD.

What device do you have?
Well the only two players I know of that have "a library" would be media center apps like Kodi and Plex. What "Kodi knockoffs" are you referencing? I didn't know there was such a thing.
I recommend Archos player over VLC. VLC had a lot of trouble playing from my external HDD connected to the Shield TV.
Buy a Android device with Kodi dynamic refresh switching.
That means the TV's refresh rate is switched by the media player to match the source video's content frames per second.
Result is nice smooth Kodi video playback, especially if your TV has a Cinema or Movie mode.
Some TV's motion interpolation / smoothing settings can mask video judder so it is not seen as much.
Android Kodi boxes that do dynamic refresh switching properly:
NVIDIA Shield
WeTek Hub / Play2
MINIX U1 / U9
Kodi is better on AMLogic S9xx boxes running LibreELEC anyway. Far far less restrictions vs anything Android Kodi.
I downloaded Plex and there's no fucking way to play local media. It says that it can't detect a local server. So stop recommending this piece of shit app. It does not do what I asked for
mx player pro
I really like Archos Video Player (pro) with the additional codecs pack.
It plays everything you throw at it and it has a great UI well integrated in Android TV
Stuttering is a known bug. Lots of people get it, some dont. I find the stuttering gets significantly worse when I use a USB to Ethernet adapter on my MiBox, switching back to WiFi makes it much easier. The only way to resolve this annoyance, is to upgrade to their Android 7.0 Beta build, but that might introduce new bugs (no passthrough in Kodi, no Netflix?).
Try Plex. Though you need to run a Plex server to stream it to your MiBox P.S: Kodi on my MiBox runs pretty fine playing media from NAS.
VLC is excellent, in my experience.
