sudden mibox issues....

by switch_laser

In recent weeks these problems are either constant or occurring more often. The mibox started out like gangbusters but lately its been more annoying than enjoyable. any help is appreciated.

  1. I use youtube a lot. it has become unbearably slow with thumbnails not loading, video freezes and some channel subscriptions not showing up. I have tried the older version and it does it as well.

  2. remote unpairs itself for whatever reason. almost as often as the nexus player remote.

  3. I have to reboot several times a day just to be able to use the device at all. most apps become unresponsive if the box goes unused for a few hours.

  4. wifi drops......regularly. both on 2.5 and 5 from my router. this isn't totally new but certainly more often. *no way to use ethernet without running new cables drilling holes in the floor etc.

I have done a factory reset on two occasions with mediocre improvements but these issues continue to crop up and sometimes worse. If I could afford a Shield it would be in my house today but its just not an option right now. Is there something I can do to alleviate these mibox issues?

UPDATE: Removing mobdro SEEMED to help a bit. I enjoyed the that app but not at the expense of performance. Also reduced background processses under developer options. I'll continue to monitor it and see if performance holds. The mibox is a good device once the bugs are worked out.

Are you using public firmware?

  1. YouTube app sucks. I noticed that it takes longer to start a video than before the update. It just video loading though, maybe a wifi issue if everything is slow (app is a half assed web wrapper).

  2. I use an IR remote, so no experiences with that. Try searching here because I have read others with that problem but don't remember fixes.

  3. Do you have sideloaded apps? Or ES Explorer? Some apps hogs memory and slows everything down. They tend to have notifications and stay in the background. Try uninstalling sideloaded apps.

It could also be the wifi drops.

  1. Do you have other devices near the box that uses wifi and do they also drop? With wifi, use you phone to get a wifi analysis app. Check for strength/interference and surrounding Wifi's channel numbers. Make sure your wifi is on a channel different from neighbors but keep in mind that channels can effect the distance your wifi goes.

Most everything you have issues with might be because of your wifi. I would start with troubleshooting that.

Also check to see how many devices are using the wifi at once. One thing you could try is using a bridge and hardwire from that. That would clear a few devices from using WiFi at once.

Are you downloading alot? Sometimes torrents and such clogs up your bandwidth.

The remote is bluetooth which uses the 2.4 Ghz spectrum. If you live near a lot of wifi access points blasting 2.4 Ghz, you could have issues with the connection. I've seen it happen before.

Unresponsive apps can be fixed by going into the developers options and changing the maximum background apps to 1 or 2. That way apps will close once you have other apps open.

WiFi dropping could be an issue on where the Mi Box is located.. and again it could be because you're in a heavy WiFi traffic area which is why the remote has issues as well. Even 5 Ghz can be saturated in an apartment complex or dorm room.

Youtube I have no clue about. I watch youtube on my computer, not my Mi Box.

Having the same issues recently on YouTube, I fixed it yesterday by clearing the cache and data on the YouTube app and removing the updates, I went back to YouTube 1.3, the experience is much better now

Seems your wifi strength is not great in mi box..

Usually reception by mi box is less compared to other devices..

If you use Bluetooth headset /game pad, it is likely to. Decrease wifi strength some more, so cause problems while browsing YouTube etc

Are you using Android 7.0?

  • Remove the ES File Explorer App, known to do all sort of bad shit with Android TV devices - use X-Plore instead.

  • Android Settings > Home > Reccomendations Row > disable App updating all the useless crap on the Home screen.

  • Continual YouTube rubbish updating is a big offender with Recommendations, and hogs resources and reduces performance.

  • Yep Developer Menu - limit background processes to 4
