New user with a few questions

by Blizzmandron

Hey all,

I have wanted to get rid of my satellite for years but my ex insisted that we needed it. I mostly watch Netflix, Crave and YouTube. I am also interested in uploading my dvd/bluray collection so I might dabble in Kodi.

So I have a 4ktv in my main room so streaming 4k would be ideal. From what I have read online and here on the sub the Nvidia shield would be the best, right?

I also I have two Tv's in the home and might like to use android tv on both. I know I can move the box back and forth but I was wondering if it was possible just to buy another box for upstairs? I know I could buy something cheaper that would do me for my streaming needs but is there an option to access my Kodi database upstairs aswell without moving the shield?

Also I don't know if this would be the right sub but do you guys/girls have suggestions for apps a newbie might not think of?

Anyways any help would be greatly appreciated. Also sorry if the formatting isn't great I am writing this from my mobile device.

there are options to share a kodi database between clients, I used to work this way, but it gets complicated for a newbie.

why bother when you can just install plex/emby and have central database with all your metadata and watching status, assuming you are storing your media files elsewhere of course, like a nas or a usb drive connected to the router.

an advantage of plex server is that you can install it on the shield directly (ideally a pro to have enough space for metadata), then use the client on the same shield and on any other device and have the same exact information

Definitely go with a shield PRO version for your dvd collection central media box and use plex/emby to serve to your other devices.

For the other devices, as another user pointed out, pretty much any streaming box will have a plex app which you can stream from your collection. However, if you want to use Kodi and streaming addons, not everything is compatible with Kodi. Roku is not. Get the 16gb shield if you can afford it or the mi box. Mi box is awesome if you are happy with 1080. If 4k is a must, stick with shield. Mi will stutter on 4k.
