Philips 49PUS7272 - Volume control on jack 3.5 audio output

by Hashvay

Hi,

I bought a Philips 49PUS7272 and it works great. Only thing is I plugged my external amplified speakers (which only have a jack/RCA input) to improve sound quality as I want to use the TV as my main media center (TV/movies/music...).

The problem I'm facing is the handling of the volume control with the remote. What I would like would be to have the possibility to control the volume with the regular +/- buttons on the remote, but unfortunately Philips didn't design it this way. When the jack is plugged and you use the +/- buttons, you are still controlling the TV speakers, and it has no effect on the jack output. In order to set the volume for the jack, you have to go to Settings>Sound>Headphone volume and ONLY THEN you can modify it.

So it means each time I would like to change the volume of my TV/movie/music I would have to go through 5-10 clicks before I have the desired effect, which is not ergonomic nor practical at all.

I read about it on various forums, including the Philips one. This seems to be something for which consumers are complaining since at least 2011, but nothing has been made to fix it. I also tried opening me own thread on the Philips forum - referencing all previous threads on the topic - but weirdly, it is not published because it has to be approved by a moderator.

I was thinking that maybe a specific launcher could help, but I cannot find any with this option. I didn't find neither any ressource to change the firmwire (root or whatever...).

I also read that there is the same issue on the optical output, so an optical/RCA converter would not be an option :(

Would any of you have an idea to fix that?

Thanks!

I DON'T want them to fix this! It's a feature for me, independent volume control for the headphones. I have a sound bar for the main sound connected through ARC, and a radio transmitter for whole house audio connected to the headphone out. I set the headphone volume once and always leave it the same, no need to change as the rest of the house have independent volume control!

Also for optical you don't need volume control, it's a digital signal going to a digital device which controls its own volume. This would be the same for ARC were it not for CEC which keeps them connected.

You have a modern tv system, get a modern speaker system

Also why not just modify the volume on your external amplifier and keep it fixed on the tv? That's how you should do it.

Do you have a remote for your amplified speakers?

I had the same problem with a Philips Tv + external amplifier and speakers, but I have a remote for the amplifier.
To achieve better sound quality, I use the optical Toslink port and a cheap DAC (Fiio D03K) to convert to RCA.

Also, to have a single remote for the tv and the amplifier, I use a Logitech Harmony.

Another idea came to me, apparently it exists some Android TV apps that allow to remap the buttons of the remote (Button remaper or mkr!), but I am not sure that I would be able to remap the headphone volume.

Anyone has ever tried this ? I plan on trying these tonight.

About the remark that Phillips haven't made nothing to fix it, I have to say I'm pretty unhappy with Phillips support of their TV's in general.

We have two Phillips smart TV's in our house, one of them is only 1 year older but hasn't been updated since android 5.0 while the other is running android 7.0. The older one can run Netflix in 4k but not Youtube, I've seen multiple people on forums claim it would be able to with and update from Phillips, (they might need some kind of deal with Google though IDK). It was a bit frustrating to discover that our new 4K TV wasn't able to run YouTube 4K.

The newer TV had a bug where it would change source to a black screen after a few minutes at a time, took many weeks before this was fixed.

These are just 2 examples, I've had much frustration over the software on these TV's. They're probably better to just use as monitors honestly. Sorry about the rant.

About your issue, I've had the same. Fortunately i'm sat close enough that I can just lean forward and change volume on the amplifier, I found no other way then.

dude just use the RCA outputs and set the speakers to off. The volume control will automatically adjust the line outs.
