Help with Sony OLED A1 streaming network

by oceanstwelve

Hi guys, just got this beast. very happy (if anyone wants to know) but i need some help. I am either a bit dissapointed with Android TV's limitations or im simply being too noob to not understand it well. Due to extreme cold here I did not get time to sit on my pc and properly setup Kodi or Plex. (i did install them, but tinkering them for best settings requieres a bit time). plex right now is saying on TV that it server is not powerful enough to stream. which is a bummer. My network is a wired gigabit by the way. so thats not a problem

as i just streamed a 65gb Batman BEgins 4k through the default video app. (I had a dlna server Serviio installed for previous tv).

so till winter goes, im stuck with this .

however i am unable to digest some very basic things.

please help:

  1. why cant i check what resolution is being played here? 2160p or 1080p (or 720p whatever). it was so easy to verify in my previous lg tv
  2. i cant check time on my latest smart tv...........
  3. i cannot change subtitles size, or color . i mean i understand basic videos is barebones but this is ridiculous?? stuck with oversized grey subtitles. lg smartshare default app was much more flexible.
  4. if i am stuck with these limitations . whats wrong with plex if anyone knows? as my network is perfect.

its too cold and i might have missed something. please ask and ill reply with info.

thanks for your time.

Do you not have heating at home or something? I don't understand why the temperature has anything to do with it.

I would just buy the 500gb Shield if you intend to use it as a Plex server (you'll have to root the 16gb for Plex metadata which will eat through your space really quickly). Remember, the TV was just meant to run Android TV well enough for the average consumer and that's it. TVs don't have the best processors as you're paying for the panel, not the SoC.

2 buy a clock? Or press the button on the remote with an i on it

3 TV settings>accessibility>subtitles (I have sony android but not same model, so your settings may differ)

4 You need to change plex settings otherwise it will try and play at 720p leading to your server needing to transcode. Also connect tv with Ethernet or check your wifi speed on tv - my internet speed through tv is rubbish.

Q. Does you Sony OLED even have a Gigabit Ethernet port to get all that high bitrate 4K data into the TV ?

Suggest using a direct connected to the TV - USB Harddrive.

You need to read this very similar post about 4K HDR video streaming on Android TV platforms: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/7tcudu/4k_hdr_playback_on_sony_kd65xd7505/

Personally I would not use anything Android for mixed SDR and 4K HDR local user content - networked video playback due to Google Android OS limitations.

There are other non Android media player platforms that provide much better local content 4K HDR video playback support. Ones with Gigabit ethernet ports.

Plex promises a lot of things but when you get too demanding like HD audio and 4K HDR it turns into a POS on many hardware platforms. There is much better media player software support when using SPMC, Kodi, LibreELEC Kodi (AMLogic S912) or MrMC (Apple TV 4K). The last two are what you should be using for 4K HDR REMUX's, not anything running Android.
