Android TV Remote Control broken

Does this app still work for anyone? My TV is on Marshmallow and the app recently stopped working. Could this be because the TV requires to have the Android TV Remote Service app which only works on Android Nougat? ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.tv.remote.service )

I've had issues in past but clearing data in Bluetooth share in app manager fixes it.

Nope. I have 2 Nexus Players and 1 MiBox, app works on none of them. The Kodi/Kore remote works, but not when its in screensaver mode.
