Google Home mini and Android TV

by blop135

Hi everyone,

Am I the only one who own a Google Home mini and an Android TV and that find it so unbelievable that we can't turn on and off our TV or launch Netflix or Spotify by the voice while we can on a Chromecast?

Seriously Google? Come on!

ninepointsix

I can turn my TV on and off with it. The Netflix issue has been around for ages though, I don't know why they're not fixing it

Make sure you set CEC to on in your TV settings, then tell your Google Home the name of your device that you want turned on (if you named it "Nexus Player", you've got to call it "Nexus Player").

My problem was that I could never get it to turn off.

I use Logitech Harmony Hubs. They let me reliably turn the TVs off and on.

Mine turns on and off via voice. But then again, I have a Shield TV connected to my Samsung, so it's just HDMI-CEC working its magic.

It's probably not all that helpful of a response, but I got sick of waiting and set up Tasker with this plugin , and IFTTT webhooks to launch apps.

The config looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/cIubz11.png (no, ******* not my real password)

And the tasker profile is:

I have a Sony Bravia tv with Android built in and I have the same issue.

Don't quite know who I'm waiting on to fix it...Google? Netflix?

I think the fact that we can use the Google home mini to control Chromecast devices is telling. The TV is described as having "Chromecast built in", so I can assume that built in Chromecasts are not equal to regular Chromecasts (and hence, Google is responsible).

I was hoping to tweet them about it but I'm not sure who to contact.

chockstahh

This was one of the reasons I gave up on Android TV. (I realise this isn't really the sub for this rant, but hey) I thought I'd be able to use YouTube TV and Google Assistant so seamlessly... meanwhile, I can't link Netflix and the YTV app took forever and a day to come out and was pretty crappy when it did. Sigh.

Here's what I get:

"Power on Family Room TV" - Wakes up Shield and CEC eventually turns on TV.

"Turn on Family Room TV" - Same as above, but Mini tells me it can't even though it just did it.

blop135

Mine tells me it can't find it and tells me to search if my TV is compatible with this. I live in France also so maybe we don't have as many options as all people that speak English. šŸ¤”

roofuskit

I can turn on and off the TV and I have 4 minis and a full size one and a Shield TV.

blop135

Yes that's exactly that, I don't have a box my TV is currently running Android TV itself. So I guess I have no other options then...šŸ™

blop135

I contacted them directly on french’s support and the technician told me he didn’t know either but just that it worked with regular chromecast.

ohgr88

With cec enabled I can turn the TV on, start YouTube, Spotify but haven't tried netflix .

blop135

How do you manage to do it? Cause when I tell him to turn on the TV, it says that it can't do it and when I looked on the Google home mini information on the official Google's site it tells that this function is not compatible with Android TV :

https://support.google.com/googlehome/answer/7498991?hl=fr

It's in French but in the "Remarques" line.

Also mine can't manage to launch Spotify or anything else on the TV. The only one app that works is Youtube.
