x265 videos worked flawlessly before. Now they max out the CPU and the video is completely jerky.

I have no issues with h265 on my Mi Box's. I use Plex to play them and they direct play just fine.
maybe you upgraded to beta nougat where not all cores are used? and I assume you restarted the box?

What player do you use? Why not try other players? Other settings on those players?
