Parental controls on Android TV

by odinknight

Hello, I am curious about the options available for parental controls on the Android TV.

I am hoping that if there is no harmonized method across my different apps (PlayStation Vue, Netflix, Google play movies and CBS) that I will be able to setup a restricted kids profile for Android TV or use setup a code to even allow access to some app/services within Android TV....of course this would be a Android TV version 8 wish list.

Either way, just wanted to know how you handled parental controls.

P.s. I have the Nvidia Shield TV.

I just realized my Asus RT-N66U has parental controls in it. So after 8pm, my 5 year olds PC loses internet access, but can still access local network shares (this includes HDHomerun channels). At 10pm, her tablet loses internet access.

If all else fails, you may have to default to restricting access based on the MAC address of the device.

I don't know if this is available for Nvidia Shield specifically, but Android TV does offer this exact thing: https://support.google.com/androidtv/answer/6123330?hl=en

In "Settings > Personal > Security & Restrictions" you can setup a restricted profile with a pin code and allow only specific apps to be used.

On caveat is that it seems you need to switch to and from the restricted profile explicitly. In other words, there's no "login" screen when you turn on the device to choose between the different profiles.
