advise on android box

by Pte123

Looking to buy a android box, basically just want it for movies and want no hassle sideloading apps. Want something that is quick and has a good interface, something that should also last a few years. I will not game atall so dont want anything that high end, probably looking to pay £60-80

Currently using aftv 1st gen and its starting to lag a little, fancy upgrading different to an amazon

Coming from a FireTV...

Be aware on Android TV media players the only one that will give Amazon Video is the NVIDIA Shield.

Your options for something decent in that price range are the Xiaomi Mi Box or consider the 2017 4K HDR capable Fire TV gen3.

They basically are running the same Hardware under the Skin . Both are AMLogic S905X(Mi Box) / S905Z (FireTV gen3)

Your other options are the MECOOL Android Boxes that have proper L1 DRM and HDCP for 1080p Netflix. Again no Amazon Video on those either. But they do run an unofficial Android TV under the hood. The AMLogic S912 boxes are snappy combos.

Well the options for devices running the Android TV operating system that are close to your budget are a used Nexus Player or a Mi Box.

I wouldn't ever recommend an Android box.

"No hassle sideloading apps". It isn't really a hassle. It's no more difficult than installing a program off a usb stick onto a PC. You might be able to avoid it, but certain services offer no other solution at the moment. i.e. Amazon Video on MiBox, or DirecTVNow on MiBox/Shield. In your price range for 1080p the MiBox works great.

The problem is, Android TV doesn't have much in your price range. The only device in your budget is the MiBox, which has a lot of problems. There are a couple more options if you can go a little higher. The Sling AirTV and the Channel Master Stream+ are both in the $100 neighborhood, but the AirTV is mostly built around the Sling service and the Stream+ is a new device which nobody has in their hands yet.

If I'm being totally honest, in your price range, I think Roku might be a better option than Android TV.
