Netflix stutter on Mi Box

by Concupiscence

Hi:

Just got a Mi Box Internation as my first Android TV device and its primary use is gonna be Netflix. Got it hooked up to a regular old 1080p LED display but it stutters every 10-15 seconds (it doesn't hiccup or break sound, just stops being smooth for a second or two and continues normally).

First, the Mi Box defaults to 720p on autodetect for some reason. It works smooth in all formats except 1080p60. I currently set it to 1080i60 and seems to work fine but it's obviously not ideal. Am I missing something? Can't this device (supposedly 4k capable) play 1080p decently?

sounds like your bandwidth to the device is lacking. if you're using wifi, move the wifi router closer. or buy an ethernet usb adapter and hardwire it in.

Not everything is the Mi Box's fault. Should look at other things along with the Mi Box as the problem.

1080 works great with it, 4k is where I hear some people have issues with.

For you, have you sideloaded any apps? They are not made for AndroidTV, so sometimes they use way more resources than AndroidTV was designed for. How is your internet? Do you have any streaming issues on other video apps (not Kodi or SMPC) that are on your Mi Box?

I would:

  1. Check other video streaming apps that you have or can install on your Mi Box. Forget about checking on other devices right now. If all are having that issue, it might be either your internet or one of the following issues.

  2. Uninstall any sideloaded apps you may have added. (Sideloaded apps are apps not installed directly from from GooglePlay store).

  3. Uninstall ES File Explorer, if you installed it. It is sketchy, always running, and caused quite a few people issues.

  4. Disable Live Channels. Some people had issues with Google Live Channels. I haven't seen much complaints anymore, so it's probably fixed, but doesn't hurt to try if 1-3 doesn't work. (Settings, Apps, find Live Channels, Force Stop, Disable, Force Stop Again.)

  5. Try Google DNS. http://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

Please read this as a primer, some TV's can try and eliminate 24p video judder. https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/motion/24p

Also realise no Netflix App running on Android TV can auto refresh switch your TV to match the frame rate of Netflix video. You need this to auto switch a TV into it's 24p Film or Cinema mode.

You need to buy an Apple TV 4K if you want auto frame rate matching/switching for really smooth video playback with Apps like Netflix and Amazon Video. It works really well with that device.

Its the lack of refresh rate switching. Mi boxs wont work if your TV hasn't got settings to smooth out the motion, If you can return it I would. Get roku if you want something cheaper than a shield.

Following this thread because I'm in a sort of similar situation. I have a Minix U9-H running custom Android TV firmware, and everything is absolutely perfect - Netflix, Kodi (1080p and 4k, seamless and smooth), live streams eg twitch, all perfect and functional and I can't shake the youtube Android tv app going a little stuttery/less-smooth every 15-20 seconds or so, it's just the OCD in me I guess..
