I've always used a thumb drive to copy and restore my build from kodi user data folder on my Android boxes but mi box gives me an error when I try to do that. Is this not supported on it?

It's possible, I did it. You just need to get a file manager from the Android TV Play Store and enable "show hidden files/folders" to find the .kodi folder.
It depends on what you use to copy it. Some file manager apps will ask for a higher level of permissions to write to anywhere on the USB drive. If they don't ask, then you are limited to writing/pasting files to a specific app-folder, inside of the "Android" folder that will automatically be created on the drive.
