Xiaomi Mi Box Marshmellow VS Nougat

by TheDiamondPicks

Hi,

So, I have a Mi Box on the way, and I'm curious to know whether the Nougat betas are stable enough to be used. I quite like some of Nougats features (specifically DVR support), so ideally I would like to use this. However I have heard conflicting reports about the stability of the builds (I do plan on flashing to see how it is for me though). I'm not interested in 4k, HDR or high end audio stuff - I've got an older TV, so it has neither of those things. I'm mostly going to be using this for Netflix, Live TV etc. Any opinions are appreciated.

(yes, I know there are better and more well supported boxes out there, but $100 NZD wasn't too bad, compared to a Shield).

I'd wait for the official one. The newest beta sounds stable (From reading, I don't have it), but the last Beta from December seemed to be relatively minor, so it should be finally coming to an end.

I'm sure that one poor part-time employee working on the update with an Android for Dummies book and English to Chinese dictionary to translate the book can't wait to be finished.

Yea I installed Android 7.0 build 1560 months ago now with zero issues. Granted I'm not a 4K user, I have mine set to 1080p.

Everything I do with it works well though - Netflix, YouTube, Kodi, Espn, RetroArch for emulation, VLC, X-plore, Spotify, chrome cast, etc.

Your priorities are misplaced.

Not trying to be an alarmist but you should be certain you have ordered the right model of MiBox. Of the 6 or so boxes carrying the MiBox designation, only the specific model MDZ-16-AB supports official AndroidTV and is designed for the broad international market.

A much greater issue than any of the minor peccadilloes affecting beta vs stock is pairing correctly with Netflix.

You should be concerned how your 'older' tv will respond to Netflix's stringent insistence on enforcing proper DRM with official AndroidTV boxes such as the MiBox. Your reference to an 'older' tv is a potential problem that may impact your Netflix enjoyment.

Check the published specs and verify your tv has hardware that supports advanced HDMI standards and hope and pray you can find mention of HDCP 1.x feature.

Lacking any of these attributes, Netflix cannot authenticate for digital security and will simply fail due to your tv's limitations.

Wish you the best....
