MiBox SMB Kodi stuttering

by Hongkikongkdn

Hey everybody,

So I’m using the latest Kodi Version Krypton and have an external HDD connected to my AirPort Extreme to create a Samba/SMB Nas. Within Kodi I can access all the movies on the drive which are h.264 1080p and some h.256 1080p and some h.256 4K and some even h.256 4K HDR. All of the movies play nice without any drops and almost zero buffering at the beginning.

But the 4K HDR movies somehow stutter extremely, like a slideshow.

The Bitrate and WiFi connection can’t be the problem as i have h.264 movies with 50gb that play buttery smooth.

VLC by the way also plays all the 4K HDR movies perfectly.

Archos player plays most of the files but not the 4K ones.

I am looking for a player that can access my SMB storage (MX-Player can’t do that I suppose) and can hardware accelerate those 4K HDR flies like vlc does. I do not want to use a usb connection because I also use the HDD as a file server.

So which player should I use instead?

Thank you already :)

I use Kodi to stream 4k hdr from SMB share..maybe you should try that as well. Hope this helps

You can use Archos and set it to open your video with another player.

Do you have Android 6.0 or 7.0?

So I think the issue has to do with the decoding of videos. I hooked up my MiBox with a USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter straight into the Airport Extreme with the hard drive attached. Still the same movies stuttered. Even some 1080p Movies like Lord if the Rings are unplayable through any App except for VLC.

I am starting to think that the hardware acceleration does not properly work when accessing a network source. Now my solution is to permanently connect the hard drive to the MiBox and i am looking for a server app to share the drive within my local network. Now all movies play instantly with zero hick-ups.

I read somewhere that Kodi only supports hardware acceleration for local files which might be the problem here.

A Gigabit equipped AMLogic S912 box like the Vorke Z6 / Tanix TX92 and run LibreELEC Kodi Krypton on it. Set and forget for 1080p SDR and 4K HDR. Does auto everything - Refresh and resolution switching for ultra smooth Kodi video playback.

Android Kodi simply is not up to the job for auto - mixed 1080p SDR / 4K HDR.

Your problem is trying to stream (likely high biterate) 4K HDR over WiFi - it's simply not reliable with some software. That is what the problem boils down to. Stop using WiFi.
