Rented movie via Google Movies quality troubles

by Denizzje

I just rented the movie 'It' on Google Movies. I at first tried to play it on my Shield TV via the Google Movies app and it played in 4K but no HDR. Then I tried the Youtube app on my Shield and it played in 1080p only. I then tried the Youtube app on my TV and hurrah, the HDR logo popped up on the top right of my screen. The excitement wore off however as I quickly noticed it was stuck on 480p! I could not select anything above 480p...

I then as a last resort tried to use the built in Chromecast of the Shield. Again, 4k but no HDR.

I am quite annoyed by this now, knowing the movie is in HDR but all my playback options do not give me the best quality. I know my Shield TV is properly set up for HDR because it runs HDR and streamed Blu-Rays via Plex with HDR (the HDR logo pops up).

Any ideas on how to either get the Shield giving me the joys of HDR, or stop the Youtube app on my TV from being silly and serve me 4K HDR instead of damn 480p HDR?

My TV is a LG OLED55E7N.

Thanks...

I believe the Nvidia Shield does not have the codecs Google is using for HDR on YouTube or Google Play Movies.

Google play movies and YouTube only do HDR on Chromecast. YouTube does HDR on assorted Smart TVs as well. I have to use my LG Web OS for YouTube and use Vudu for Movies on the Shield since they found a way to do HDR! Shameful!

Check your internet speed.

Have you tried Vudu? My experience with Vudu is better than Google play movies, especially if buying the movie.

This video should stream in 4K HDR as well. Does it work on either your Shield or TV?

HDR for this video works on my Roku Ultra, but not on my Shield.
