Youtube and HDR?

by XorpiZ

Hello!

I've just bought a Phillips TV (the 55PUS7502, to be specific) and updated Android to 7.0. Perhaps it's a silly question, but shouldn't the TV display "HDR Signal" when playing a 4K HDR video from the uilt-in Youtube-app?

The videos sure doesn't look like they are supporting HDR.

It's because it doesn't, you need VP9 profile 2 to support HDR on Youtube and this TV doesn't support this codec

The Sony TVs with Android TV also don't do HDR. Many folks use a Shield if they want YouTube in HDR.

I'm happy with the Amazon and Netflix built in apps which do 4K HDR, so I'm not planning on a Shield any time soon.

It supports HDR but not on YouTube and as you say it's pretty dumb but I don't know any Android TV with youtube HDR right now. 😣

This reason makes me use my Android TV less and less. In fact, it's all kind of an unnecessary mess right now. My 4k TVs built in apps are the only thing that plays HDR on Netflix and YouTube.

My mi box and shield TV are basically resigned to being Kodi boxes now, which with the Kodi issues out there, they both are pretty much collecting dust.

This doesn't need to be this way, it's not like HDR 4k is new on the timeline that most technology moves. It just feels...lazy. Streaming boxes are just not keeping up with it, really, and it's frustrating.

SOrry for later comment, but what about PS4 pro, does it support You tube HDR? I Have HDR for gaming but seems to be not working on PS4 PRO, BTW I have Sony 850e
