Recently noticed my shield 2015 remote is not anywhere near as accurate with my voice as it used to be. In fact it virtually picks up nothing I say. Is this a known issue? Mostly use for Google or YouTube voice search.

This has happened to me too, no fix I can find
Had the same problem. If you are within guarantee Nvidia gives you a new one. Otherwise you have bad luck.
Happened me too in the last few months, proper annoying!
Try change the battery, when my mibox battery is dying, the mic is the first thing to go down
I have the same problem with mine. As far as I can find, it is an issue between the 1st Gen.(recharge batt.) remote firmware and the OS. It appears to go as far as making the mic. on a 2nd Gen. (removable batt.) remote fail to operate if a 1st Gen. remote is also paired to the same unit. This problem has been around ever since the update that brought the 1st Gen. Shield units OS, up to the same as the 2nd units. There has been no word out of Nvidia that I can find with the exception of support suggesting to "replace the unit because it was old"
Same happened with my 2015 remote. Worked great, than all the sudden voice search didn't work at all.
