Xiaomi Mi Box doesn't have the option to force RGB? What should I buy instead that doesn't have this problem?

by shutta

So I finally got my Mi Box because I've heard good things about it, all reviews seems to praise it, people have recommended it as a great kodi box, and I want to set one up for my mom but lo and behold after a couple of minutes of use it goes green/purple aka completely unusable. I've tried changing the frequency from 60hz to 50hz, turning off the advanced color option, changing settings on my TV but after changing everything I still keep getting this problem. I can't believe they haven't updated the box to support this option? So now the only thing left is to return the box?

How does something like this even happen I mean it's even promoted by Google as a quality android TV device but unfortunately for me it's now unusable except for really short periods of time.

Im really disappointed in this purchase I wish people mentioned this in reviews or something, there isn't even much info on the internet about it and the few threads there are about this problems, none has ever solved it, so it seems.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a device in the similar price and performance range?

Did you try the box on a different TV? I don't want to sound mean but it can also be the TV. Expecting 100% compliance on HDMI standards on every device out there is nearly impossible. Even AV Receivers and other HDMI devices can never claim 100% compatibility with everything from every manufacturer.

I once had to return a brand new car because there was no way to play my 8 track tape collection. Why would the car maker not tell me?

You can find cable rigs that accomodate adapting hdmi output to rgb, assuming your tv has the right connectors. Amazon is your best source with a wide variety and generous return policy. If your area still has Radio Shack stores that might work.

You are blaming the Mi Box, when actually it is screwed up HDMI EDID on older Sony / Philips TV's that incorrectly tells media players they can handle a YCbCr colorspace.

If you search the Web you will find all sorts of articles on old Sony TV's with green/purple screens with all sorts of devices.

Yes an RGB option would be a good workaround - but the permanent workaround would be a properly working New TV.

I had the same issue with my old Philips TV (2008 model) and tried all the software options you mentioned as well as several HDMI splitters, but nothing helped.

I found out that the problem is with the communication between my TV and the AMLogic processor so most of the TV boxes were out of the question.

Finally I purchased the Raspberry Pi 3 model B. Video playback from the USB drive works fine as well as streaming (mainly YouTube). The only downside is that Netflix is not available "out of the box" and needs a bit tweaking. Also you need buy a remote separately. Other than that it works fine.

Issue solved by updating Mi Box to Android 8 (OTA) and selecting "RGB 10 bit" on display settings.

How old is this TV have never heard of MiBox having this kind of issue. I don't even think I understand it. I have used my MiBox on 4 different TV's and never had a problem

Is there not an option to enable sRGB in the developer options on the MiBox ROM?

I'll have to check on mine when I get home. I know I use that option on my Nexus 6P, but dunno if it's in the MiBox one.

Nvidia shield will be the best choice
