[Australia] ABC iView, ABC KIDS iView and ABC ME on AndroidTV?

by thedugong

Investigating getting a new TV box and discovered AndroidTV. Just wondering if any of the Australians here (assuming there are some) have installed ABC iView, ABC KIDS iView and ABC ME? Do they work ok?

These are essential for any TV box for us.

Thanks!

I wish the US got more international channels, especially news, but it doesn't and can't check.

I did find this though: https://ausdroid.net/2017/10/28/abc-working-iview-app-android-tv-now-available-xiaomi-mi-box/

There's an iView app on the Foxtel Now box, but that hasn't got Netflix. The iView app for the Foxtel Now box only works on that box for now.

If you check our whirlpool though, some unofficial work has been done porting the ABC iView and SBS onDemand apps to Android TV. The projects are on GitHub.

The Sony Android TV has the web view of each catch up app.

I think it's just iview, but I haven't checked for a while.

I run the iView app thorough Kodi for the kids. Shortcuts to shows/abckids. Have been doing it for years on many different devices. Currently using a combo of mi box and Xbox.

The Apple TV 4/4K has the best catchup Aust. Apps support vs anything else. It also has better Operating System support for 25 frames per second - Catchup TV / IPTV. For nice smooth video playback when using these Apps:

The Catchup Apps are nicely integrated into Apple's tvOS as well, with proper searching functionality - especially when using the integrated TV App.

Android TV is a long way behind when it comes to Apps support outside of the USA.

I just tried the community made iView App yesterday on Android TV (ATV) and it's broken again. The SBS ATV App was broken as well.

I've tried all the Oz Catchup Android permutations and Apple wins hands down for TV channel coverage, smooth video playback, TV program search-ability and App reliability.

In case you haven't spotted it, ABC iView has Chromecast support, so there is always that to fall back on.

I sideloaded it onto my NVIDIA ShieldTV and it works perfctly

I find the iView app a bit slow on my shield. It could be my connection (12/1), but the Kodi catch-up tv add-on works perfectly. There is also a FreeView add-on for Kodi, which there is currently not for Android TV.
