I have the original Shield remote that charges over USB and it won't work unless it's plugged into the charger. If I let it charge for a day and unplug it, nothing works. Plug it in and it responds instantly.

Is there a way to do this on the new(2017) remotes?
Try to reset the remote, by pressing 'home' and 'back' and also the 'voice search' buttons simultaneously, and hold them for about 20 secs, this will reset your remote, and it will probably work OK after... (atleast mine did)
