I see there is a a/v connection at the back of the device . But it doesn't look like a standart 3.5mm stereo jack. It doesn't look like optical output either.

I can confirm that's a combined 3,5mm analog jack + minitoslink out indeed (you can see the red light coming out of it). A standard jack cable will work, make sure to click it all the way down, it requires a tiny bit of force. I've used for months with a regular RCA to jack cable. If it doesn't work check that you're not doing HDMI audio out or digital out in the settings (automatic should be fine). Actually, it also outputs composite anolog video and audio if for whatever reason you want to connect it to a display without digital inputs.
That a/v connection combines video, audio left and audio right ( yellow, red and white phono cables) so just get the adapter/splitterwas mistaken, it's a combined SPDIF Out / 3.5mm audio output port. you can connect normal audio cable
