Mi Box 3, no HDR

by xevilrobotx

I just got a Mi Box 3 and can't seem to get HDR to work. When using my Xbox, ps4, or built in TV apps with HDR content an HDR or Dolby Vision logo pops up in the top right corner. I've yet to see that happen with anything using the mi box - tried Netflix, Google play movies and TV (which is the entire reason I bought it), and YouTube with no luck. Anyone else ever have this problem and know what I'm doing wrong, or did I maybe get a defective one? I've tried all 3 HDMI ports and have switched to using the cables that I use on the PS4 and xbox with no luck. Thanks!

If you haven’t updated the OS from Marshmallow to nougat(Beta) then there’s no way for HDR to work. This should be clearly indicated on the box of mibox. It’s been more than a year already but until now we’re still hoping of the official non-beta nougat update.

You will not get 4K HDR Youtube on any Android TV device.

Google has restricted 4K HDR Youtube to select non Android TV devices.

To be honest 4K HDR works a lot better on the Apple TV 4K because it has Firmware and Apps support (not Youtube) for auto Frame Rate Matching and auto Dynamic Range Matching aka SDR <<-->> HDR switching that results in correct color outputs.

Firmware features Android TV media players running current stable release Firmware can only dream about, and that includes the Shield.

For regular 1080p HDTV the Mi Box is fine. For 4K HDR forget it. The thing is never going to get supported or updated.

Get a Shield TV if you want any kind of future proofing whatsoever. Granted even Shield TV hasn't even announced any Android 8.0/8.1/9.0 updates yet.
