Live Channels DVR - Can't get Network Tuner to appear.

by TimothyDahBomb

Received a Shield TV and HDHomeRun Connect a few days ago, and can get live TV through the Live Channels app.

I can't seem to get the network tuner to connect at all, however. Very fustrating as unit is for my parents and they require this feature. I've tried to follow as many steps as possible from here: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/7tq50a/live_channels_dvr_not_working_on_nvidia_shield/?utm_source=reddit-android , but have had no success.

Does anyone have any suggestions to get this working?

Are you in the US?

I never tried it, but Tvheadend can be hosted on the Shield. https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1000226/shield-tv/tvheadend-apk-the-easy-way-to-run-tvheadend-on-the-shield-/

I tried Tvheadend on a Pi once, the Live Channels integration wasn't great at the time. Plex works great once you get used to it. Emby is very similar, but includes a traditional grid guide. Not as polished and stable as Plex in my opinion.

For free hdhomerun integration you can try using Kodi on the shield. I'm surprised no one else suggested it. It also has the traditional grid layout. First setup could be a pain though, so you need to do it yourself.

Tvheadend DVR integration with live channels is still in beta. I have it, doesn't work half the time.

Does the hdhr have itself DVR or is it just a tuner? If it's just a tuner then I'd suggest to opt for Emby, but you have to install it somewhere, and DVR is not free

Or you could use Kodi connected to tvheadend which connects to hdhr. Kodi control of tvheadend DVR is much better than live channels. But in my opinion that is too many layers to the onion.

Edit: From the site I can see hdhr has a DVR service if you connect an hd. So why aren't you using that? Controlled from Kodi for example.

I think Android Live Channels only works in the US so far.

You can install the Hdhomerun app, then add that as a source to live channels. No DVR though.

I just use Plex DVR. It requires a Plex Pass though. TVheadend might be worth looking into.

I think you are in for a world of pain because of this unresolved issue as well:

Live Channels Not Releasing Tuners

Android Kodi Krypton will not work either if you were to use the HD Homerun with TvHeadend because of broken, unreliable TV deinterlacing with Android Kodi Krypton on all Android Hardware.

These are the exact reasons why I never bought a NVIDIA Shield.

Ultimate suggestion - buy a Fetch PVR.

If you want a solution that looks great, is easy to use, and just works, check out: Channels . It is a little pricey though.
