You can also use this site to generate an app shortcut to your homescreen:

Just make sure the package name is identical to the name you are making the shortcut for.

Take a look at "Tv App Repo" from the Google Play store. That's what I've been using to create shortcuts for apps that I've sideloaded to my Nvidia Shield TV.
