I'm learning Android app development, what kind of apps do you think Android TV needs?

by SatanicOnion

I was wondering what the community for this sub had to say as far as what they would like to see on an Android TV

conman__1040

A video chat app that connects to an external camera.

juzzle

A decent file explorer that isn't the miserably bad ES File Explorer ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop ) - we just want something that can map out NAS or network server so we can launch videos stored there. Thanks for asking

mrwiffy

A live channels app without bugs.

GoTaku

A reddit app that works with remote and voice command.

xdozex

An app to view Google Photos!!

2 things I can think of right away. 1- A remote control app that has cursor support. 2- An app that in someway enables or works around being able to use another Google account. If this is not possible then maybe a YouTube clone that can have another users watch history and subscriptions. It's so annoying that my YouTube has Minecraft videos and peppa pig dominating the recommended row. The one big problem with Android TV is that it's great for the bedroom but not so much for the family/living room.

ShortFuse

Some sort of Metacritic/IMDB/Rotten Tomatoes review aggregator app.

I don't think it is possible, but if you could make a customizable launch and get it to stick (Google removed set as default), you'd make a ton of money. Google lacks designers (2 infinite scroll rows? Really?) and won't allow user choices.

A real YouTube app that lets you sign into a different account (and stays). A Google Drive app. Something that brings in apps onto Live Channels... Hell, anything Google since they don't do it for themselves.

If you can make a third party Twitch app that doesn't bug out on follow menu. Maybe allow for easy UI that isn't, again, one infinite scroll of games (dumbest designers). Maybe add filters.

Really, if there was a way for you to improve big name apps, you would do good. Doubt people are allowed.

Something like Tasker with a TV interface. I have several automation needs with my Nvidia Shield and some tasks that happen on a schedule, I had to set them all up with a mouse and keyboard with a sideloaded app.

maxdrive

An app that gives you a morning news report by assembling 10 minutes of news clips. You can choose between a few durations like 10, 15, or 30 min.

Ideally the clips would be a well rounded update and not just a few random clips random clips.

bzz11g

Sleep timer app

wee-tod-did

an authentic ustvnow app, outside of a kodi add on.

oroboros74

A slideshow/"screensaver" app that allows you to listen to Spotify while you view Google Photos.

joazito

A speed test app. That uses speedtest.net servers.

Piccoro

An app that allows us to connect a DualShock 4 controller to play Android games.

panagiac

TVIrl with auto update :(

whatdc

I'll go with something different. Give me a remote app I can use with my Chromebook. I can use the regular Google Android TV remote app on my phone but not my Android app enabled Chromebook.

Bllq21

Launchers! Well at least I need those lol

bregmadaddy

Something to allow remote viewing of your ShieldTV to your Daydream Device in Daydream mode.
